FilmOpen is a plain-text format for describing a film, and a desktop application for working with those files. Start with the application, explore the format, or help build what comes next.
Use the application
Section titled “Use the application”- Get started — run the Windows application and explore the bundled sample.
- Create a project — set up a film, your author handle, and its first project file.
- Browse and compare — navigate entities, epochs, and alternative versions.
- Versions and selections — understand forks, official selections, and personal picks.
- Media and the shared library — understand where files live and how the application finds them.
Understand the format
Section titled “Understand the format”Read the Project Specification for the complete file format, naming rules, references, examples, and plugin contracts. Read the Software Specification for the application’s architecture and implementation limits.
The two specifications are maintained with the application. This site publishes complete snapshots so that the documentation remains available independently of its source repository.
Extend and contribute
Section titled “Extend and contribute”- Plugin documentation — document an extension and state its compatibility clearly.
- Contribute documentation — propose a correction or a new guide through GitHub.
- Authoring guide — write Markdown with screenshots, examples, and durable help links.
A film you can read
Section titled “A film you can read”Characters, places, scripts, shots, and sound live in plain JSON files. Media lives beside them. Versions belong to their authors, and the team chooses what becomes official.
Join the conversation
Section titled “Join the conversation”Ask questions and discuss ideas in GitHub Discussions. Report software bugs and documentation corrections in FilmOpen Issues. For documentation corrections, include the page address.
